Senator Proposes Making April 20th an Official Holiday to Honor Cannabis Culture

April 21, Denver, CO: A Colorado state senator today announced plans to propose legislation establishing April 20th as an official state holiday to honor the culture and history of cannabis. Senator Jane Doe believes April 20th, known worldwide as "420 Day," deserves official recognition and celebration in the first state to legalize recreational marijuana use.
"Colorado has led the nation in embracing cannabis and building an industry that employs thousands of citizens and generates hundreds of millions in revenue," Senator Doe said at a press conference at the state capitol. "It is only fitting that we establish April 20th as 'Colorado Cannabis Day' to commemorate the progress we've made."
If passed, Senate Bill 420 would make April 20th a paid holiday for state employees and public schools. Private businesses would remain open, though many likely observe the day with special events and promotions. The bill faces an uncertain path forward, with some colleagues voicing concerns over commercializing a day associated with substance abuse and counterculture activism.
However, grassroots advocacy groups and cannabis business leaders cheered the proposed legislation, seeing it as an important step in legitimizing their industry and culture. "For too long, cannabis consumers have been marginalized and stigmatized merely for enjoying a flower that brings people joy," said one longtime Denver activist in support of the bill. "It's past time we recognize our shared heritage and celebrate it openly, not just quietly and underground as we have for generations."
While Denver reportedly saw its largest 4/20 crowds yet this year, tourism officials expect little impact on the day's popularity if recognized officially. "Denver has established itself as a premier cannabis travel destination, largely due to the city's commitment to the day and embracing its spirit of freedom and community," said a spokesperson for Visit Denver. " Making April 20th a state holiday would only further cement Colorado's status as an forward-thinking place where people can peacefully enjoy and advocate for a plant."
With passionate advocates on both sides of the issue, the future of Senate Bill 420 remains unclear until debates begin in committee and on the Senate floor. But for now, Colorado finds itself at the center of yet another debate over the novel questions of law and policy that come with legalized cannabis.
